Go Open – Richard Stallman Part 1 Full Interview

Author: admin  //  Category: free software

Richard M. Stallman is the founder of the GNU Project, launched in 1984 to develop
the free software operating system GNU. The name “GNU” is a recursive acronym
for “GNU’s Not Unix”. GNU is free software: everyone is free to copy it and
redistribute it, as well as to make changes either large or small. Non-free software
keeps users divided and helpless, forbidden to share it and unable to change it.
A free operating system is essential for people to be able to use computers in
freedom. Today, Linux-based variants of the GNU system, based on the kernel Linux
developed by Linus Torvalds, are in widespread use. There are estimated to be
some 20 million users of GNU/Linux systems today.

Linus Torvalds on GNU/Linux

Author: admin  //  Category: free software

Linus Torvalds states that without the GNU software from the Free Software Foundation such as the GNU C compiler it would not have been possible to develop the Linux kernel or most of the “open source” programs. The combination of the GNU operating system and the Linux kernel make up what is called the GNU/Linux operating system. Torvalds also states that he agrees and uses the GNU General Public License (GPL).

Free Software Song

Author: admin  //  Category: free software

inspired by the Song of Richard Stallman this one but mostly different, sung by the band Fenster

Join us now and share the software;
You’ll be free, hackers, you’ll be free.
x2

Hoarders may get piles of money,
That is true, hackers, that is true.
But they cannot help their neighbors;
That’s not good, hackers, that’s not good.

When we have enough free software
At our call, hackers, at our call,
We’ll throw out those dirty licenses
Ever more, hackers, ever more.

Join us now and share the software;
You’ll be free, hackers, you’ll be free.
x2

Free software on Linux

Author: admin  //  Category: free software

Why spend money on software when you can get all this for free!

Why download software illegally when there is plenty of open source software just waiting for you to discover it!

This is a demonstration of the software i use on a daily basis without having to pay for it. To counteract the opinion that Linux is difficult to use, i show how easy it is: i have everything i need.

I use Debian Linux with the Gnome interface and Beryl for cute visual effects and the cube of virtual desktops.

Some useful links:
Debian Linux: http://www.debian.org/
Gnome: http://www.gnome.org/
Beryl: http://www.beryl-project.org/

Firefox: http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/
Epiphany: http://www.gnome.org/projects/epiphany/
Evolution: http://www.gnome.org/projects/evolution/

VMware: http://www.vmware.com/
IEs 4 Linux: http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/
Wine: http://www.winehq.org/

Software for Linux is reliable, easy to use, enjoyable, legal, and free. Enjoy it! If you do need to run any Windows software, you can always run it using Wine, or use VMware to run Windows inside a virtual machine. You can also dual-boot your computer so you have a choice when you start up, whether you want to load Windows or Linux.

NB. I am not sure whether all the software in this demonstration is open source, but it is definitely all available at no cost. I am willing to help anyone who wants to get started using Linux.
