Prototype (stylized as “[PROTOTYPE]“) is an upcoming action game in development by Radical Entertainment and based on an original IP developed in-house. The game is due to be released in North America on June 9, 2009, in Oceania on June 10 and in Europe on June 12. The game will be compatable on with Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 platforms. Prototype was released a day early in Australia.

Characters

Alex J. Mercer

The protagonist antihero. Alex has the ability to modify his genetic code on the fly to produce amazing powers of attack, defense, and perception. He can also easily perform superhuman feats of strength, endurance, speed and agility. Alex was an employee at GENTEK, a corporation centered on biotechnology, before the “incident” which took place 3 weeks before the start of the game.

Dana A. Mercer

Alex’s younger sister. She followed in her brother’s footsteps and ran away from home at a young age to fulfill her dreams. She helps Alex by performing research, aided by her studies in journalism.

Karen Parker

A GENTEK researcher and Alex’s previous love interest from before the incident.

Dr. Bradley Ragland

The doctor who examined Alex before he first awoke with his powers. He is one of Alex’s allies against the infection and an accomplished pathologist. His involvement with the virus, and the entire incident, goes deeper than the surface suggests.

Dr. Raymond McMullen

The head of research at GENTEK. Little else is currently known about this character.

The Specialist

Blackwatch’s finest. He has dealt with Alex’s kind before. Nothing surprises him in biological war. He’s seen it all, and is totally merciless. He is well equipped to deal with various forms of the infection, including the player’s character. In a recent trailer, he has been referred to as Captain Cross.

Elizabeth Greene

A name that appears in a document recovered from Alex’s laptop. She is currently in isolation at the GENTEK facility in New York City. It is assumed that she has abilities that are similar in nature to Alex’s. She appears to be a young girl and a recent trailer on IGN shows her stating “The time for waiting is over.” to Alex before attacking him. Also in a recent trailer, Alex released Greene but finds out that she’ll infect everything she touches.

US Military

US Marine Forces are deployed upon a quarantined Manhattan Island. Martial law is declared, and the city itself is occupied when the virus takes on epidemic proportions. The US military possesses battle tanks, armoured personnel carriers and attack helicopters such as the AH64 Apache, in addition to infantry armed with various weapons such as assault rifles, grenade launchers and missile launchers. The Marines set up fortified areas within New York, deploying turrets, guards and barricades on the streets. The player will often have to enter (either subtly or overtly) these areas in order to gain access to military targets in the Web of Intrigue.

Playing through the opening minutes of Prototype is a bit of a blur, and not just because it’s one of roughly 600,000 titles Activision is presenting in a rammed pre-E3 press event in the middle of London. Prototype would probably be a bit of a blur if you were dipping into it after a fifteen-hour snooze in a four-poster bed, with your own personal demo pod set up in the ballroom of Sandringham Palace, the Dalai Lama on hand to show you the controls, and members of Hansard fluttering nearby to note down even the most fleeting of your impressions. Prototype seems like a blur because that’s how the game plays: from the very start, it’s hectic, bloody, rollicking, and a little unhinged. Take away the present-day setting, and it’s the kind of thing a syphilitic pirate might hallucinate, laid up in bed with a high fever.

An open-world superhero game set in New York City, Prototype’s mission statement appears to involve getting the player punching things and jumping around rooftops as quickly as possible. This is an enjoyable proposition, given the frustrating absence – as far as we can tell – of a Crackdown 2, and it’s one that doesn’t appear to be overly burdening developers Radical Entertainment with the labours of storytelling. The plot can be explained in a few breathless gasps of cliché: amnesia…strange new powers…deadly virus…look out, Tank! What’s vividly clear, however, in amongst the crushing spleens, pulped brains, and shattered military hardware, is that when swine flu finally does knock it up a notch and the streets of Europe are filled with sneezing zombies, Prototype’s lead hoodie, Alex Mercer, is certainly somebody you wouldn’t mind having in your camp.

Not only could Alex speedily outrun any airborne pathogens with a gentle squeeze of the right trigger, the man’s a kind of offal-coated human penknife, capable of sprouting all manner of deadly appendages whenever the need arises (and often when it doesn’t and you’re just bored at some traffic lights). Giant blade for an arm? No problem. Massive fist for taking out lorries? Can do, comrade! Ground-pounding skills to make weird spikes shoot out of the tarmac and gore any nearby enemies? Who isn’t doing that in ‘09?

That’s fully-powered, of course, as the game begins in Metroid mode, booting you right into a rubble-strewn post-apocalyptic Times Square on a weirdly balmy summer afternoon, with every conceivable skill a morally-ambiguous walking god might desire lying the mere push of the bumper away. Powers dictate pace, just as clearly as kills used to mean skills, as you set about doling out violence in Jackson Pollock tangles of blood and brain: most enemies are mere flies, so Radical sends swarms after you, and soon the shattered streets of New York are filled with huddled groups of soldiers, and rampaging mobs of raw-skinned mutants.

During the subsequent few minutes of entirely deranged slaughter, you’re smacking tanks around, punching army types’ heads off, and running up the sides of buildings with a distinctly bittersweet sensation. Why? Because this is all too much fun: it’s too fast, too chaotic, and you know that the Windy Apple can’t take much more of it.

inFamous is an upcoming sandbox-style video game for the Sony PlayStation 3. It is currently in development by Sucker Punch Productions, creators of Rocket: Robot on Wheels, and the Sly Cooper video game franchise. The game was announced at Sony’s E3 2007 Press Conference on July 11, 2007. The debut trailer indicated that the game would be released sometime in 2008, although the July 2008 issue of Game Informer has stated that the release date has been moved to Spring 2009. It will be the company’s first original IP since Sly Cooper.

The game is a third-person sandbox world that combines elements of the superhero MMO City of Heroes with a roaming open-world, allowing the player to make choices between being a hero or an anti-hero that will affect the game. The player will also have access to electrical powers. The player will obtain them right at the beginning of the game.

According to the Game Informer preview, inFamous follows the story of Cole, a resident of a fictional Empire City. At the start of the game, an explosion rips apart six city blocks, leaving behind a crater and Cole as the only survivor. The explosion has granted Cole several electricity-based powers, but he falls into unconsciousness, waking up two weeks later to find that Empire City has fallen into chaos; without police, gangs have taken over areas of the city, and a plague has infected many of the residents causing the city to be quarantined by the government. It is revealed by “The Voice of Survival”, a surviving disk jockey that broadcasts across the city, that Cole was the cause of the explosion, and thus sets the population of Empire City against him. Cole must come to terms with his powers, and opt to help those in need or simply survive on his own, facing off against larger threats that have manifested in the city due to the explosion and its aftermath.

According to Fox, the team wanted to have Cole as a “kind of an everyman”, such that they could then “get into the headspace of what it would be like to be a real human being who has been granted these exceptional abilities”. While Cole is the main playable character, he is joined by two friends; Zeke, a conspiracy theorist and survivalist who becomes jealous of Cole’s powers, and Trish, Cole’s ex-girlfriend and medical student who resents him but still helps in treating the injured, a “Lois Lane with syringes” as stated by Sucker Punch.

inFamous is a sandbox video game. The player controls Cole and his newly acquired electrical powers as he makes his way around Empire City. Ultimately, the player will need to defeat three major forces that have each taken over one section of Empire City.

Cole’s primary means of interaction is through his electricity-based powers. These include shooting electricity from his hands to nearby targets, creating an electricity-based shield to repel foes, and creating a delayed explosion of a ball of energy much like sticky grenades. The electrical powers can be used both against living targets as well as inanimate objects; Game Informer describes one such situation where the player could opt to take out armed guards with electricity directly, or instead use the power on electrical generators to cause them to explode, damaging the guards in that fashion…

That’s half true. Inevitably, the moment arises when there are simply no more tanks to be thrown around, no more mutants to be pummelled into the sidewalk, and no more frightened onlookers to accidentally slice to pieces, and so you’re shuttled back in time to an evening a few days prior to the end of civilisation. The rubble and chaos has gone, yellow cabs zip past headed up town rather than rusting in sad piles halfway out of the window of a health food store, and the streets are filled with couples dashing back and forth, unaware that a distinctly unstable Alex Mercer has just woken up in a nearby morgue, and is about to turn their city into the urban equivalent of hamster bedding.

But the good news is that, although your arm blades and rock fists are MIA for the time being, when it comes to movement, even at your very weakest you can still expect to leap over buses and race down Fifth Avenue faster than a speeding pigeon. It feels utterly fantastic, with the game obligingly hopping you over oncoming traffic when you sprint across the road, and sending you running right up the wall and to the top of any building you point yourself at, as crunchy clouds of brick dust waft about in your wake. Once on a rooftop, and with some handy attack helicopters to practice on (even at this early stage, mysterious Blackwatch paramilitary folk are eager to have a word), you’ll find you can also rip giant air conditioning units out of the ground and fling them halfway across town, taking out any flying enemies in a sad spiral of flames.

Prototype begins, in other words, roughly where Crackdown ends, and as the demo concludes, it’s a proposition that’s both exciting and worrying. Radical Entertainment’s previous title, Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, gave you so many toys in the first few minutes that the game struggled to really go anywhere after that, and, with even a hobbled Mercer being able to get around Manhattan in a matter of minutes, and give baddies a comprehensive shoeing before he’s even caught his first EXP boost, it could potentially be rather tricky to deliver long-term on such a high level of excitement. With a handy targeting arrow and such effortlessly exhilarating traversal, every route between missions could easily become a straight line from one fight to the next: has the developer got anything planned to tempt you off-road?

Radical is confident it has tricks up its sleeve, of course, not least with the gradual return of all those gory powers. Then there’s the – as yet, largely unexplored – mechanics of consuming certain NPCs to learn their skills and assume their shape (John Carpenter’s Kirby!), which hints at both gentle puzzles and the odd stealth pace-changer to follow.

The explosion has granted Cole several electricity-based powers, but he falls into unconsciousness, waking up two weeks later to find that Empire City has fallen into chaos; without police, gangs have taken over areas of the city, and a plague has infected many of the residents causing the city to be quarantined by the government. It is revealed by “The Voice of Survival”, a surviving disk jockey that broadcasts across the city, that Cole was the cause of the explosion, and thus sets the population of Empire City against him. Cole must come to terms with his powers, and opt to help those in need or simply survive on his own, facing off against larger threats that have manifested in the city due to the explosion and its aftermath.

According to Fox, the team wanted to have Cole as a “kind of an everyman”, such that they could then “get into the headspace of what it would be like to be a real human being who has been granted these exceptional abilities”. While Cole is the main playable character, he is joined by two friends; Zeke, a conspiracy theorist and survivalist who becomes jealous of Cole’s powers, and Trish, Cole’s ex-girlfriend and medical student who resents him but still helps in treating the injured, a “Lois Lane with syringes” as stated by Sucker Punch.

inFamous is a sandbox video game. The player controls Cole and his newly acquired electrical powers as he makes his way around Empire City. Ultimately, the player will need to defeat three major forces that have each taken over one section of Empire City.

Cole’s primary means of interaction is through his electricity-based powers. These include shooting electricity from his hands to nearby targets, creating an electricity-based shield to repel foes, and creating a delayed explosion of a ball of energy much like sticky grenades. The electrical powers can be used both against living targets as well as inanimate objects; Game Informer describes one such situation where the player could opt to take out armed guards with electricity directly, or instead use the power on electrical generators to cause them to explode, damaging the guards in that fashion…

Superhero games have always been fairly tame, violence-wise. This is for the best, as it keeps little Timmy from asking why his favorite costumed crusader ripped a thug into a pile of bloody pieces. Thankfully, Prototype has created an all new character in Alex Mercer, and because he isnt bound by the rules of traditional superheroism, he is allowed to do whatever he well pleases. I recently went hands-on with Prototype, and what I played left me excited about the potential of this open-world action extravaganza.

Alex Mercer doesnt possess standard powers. Instead of having the ability to fly or shoot lasers out of his eyes, Alex is able to absorb other living things and modify his body based on what is needed in a situation—like turning his hands into claws to maul oncoming soldiers. While absorbing, Alex can read peoples memories and must do so during the adventure to learn more about his past. In addition, Alex has the strength and agility of a god, allowing him to punch through tanks and run up buildings with ease.

The gameplay of Prototype is very similar to Radical Entertainments previous superhero effort, The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. Like that game, you have a gigantic sandbox of a city at your disposal to wreak as much havoc in as you see fit. Also similar is the opposition you will face as armed soldiers, helicopters and tanks will be sent to take you down after you start causing trouble. To keep himself alive, Alex can hijack certain enemy vehicles to turn the tide of a battle and can also learn how to use some of the militarys more advanced weaponry later in the game.

The violence of Prototype is worth mentioning on its own, as it is superlatively gory from start to finish. When Alex uses his hand blades, enemies split open with an explosion of blood and the streets quickly become splattered in red after a heated confrontation. The developers clearly have a sense of humor, as some of Alexs more advanced abilities show this in full effect. For example, Alex is able to use a soldiers body as a surfboard to sweep down the street and knock down troops that are trying to take him out. When a tank approaches, Alex can morph his hands into steel mallets, allowing him to pound through the military vehicles in a matter of seconds. It is all very over the top and ridiculous, yet very fun to play and watch.

The controls of the game are solid, as I was able to start scaling buildings and slamming enemy skulls into the pavement in a matter of seconds. The combat uses a lock-on mechanic that enables you to focus on the intended target no matter what you are doing, allowing you to perform some of your acrobatic maneuvers without losing sight of the enemy. I didnt get to use any of the guns or vehicles in the game, but I am sure that they will utilize the same lock-on targeting rather than a traditional third-person aiming system.

Overall, Prototype is shaping up very well. The demo that I played was very limited and seemed almost like a tutorial level, so it is tough to judge what an actual mission will be like. Given Radicals pedigree, it is safe to assume that the final game will take these concepts and run with them as the controls were solid, the action was fun, and the open-world disaster that ensued was always entertaining.

UFC fans have had to wait more than five years for a legitimate recreation of their favorite animalistic activity. Now, they’re being greeted with UFC 2009 Undisputed, the first in what hopes to be a long-running franchise built from the ground up by THQ and the development team at Yuke’s Media Creations. Because we’ve had to wait so long before venturing back to the virtual octagon, there’s a ton of pressure on this UFC game to accurately depict the complexities of the sport while still making it a blast to pummel your opponent’s head into chunky gravy. Did they succeed? Keep reading to find out.

The first thing that will hit you when you sit down to play UFC 2009 Undisputed is the complexity of the control scheme. It’s going to be daunting to everyone who picks up the controller at first, but THQ actually has done an admirable though it’s by no means perfect job of mapping the intricacies of the fighting to a game controller. Accessible isn’t a word that will ever be used to describe the mechanics, but that doesn’t mean they don’t suit UFC. There’s also a tutorial and an in-depth training mode where you’ll be able to hone your skills in the ring.

Standard strikes are easy enough with a combination of face and shoulder buttons being used for high and low kicks and punches as well as blocking. You’ll see cool variations to almost every strike in the game depending on which fighting style you choose (everything you could want is represented here). Landing strikes is satisfying enough, but you won’t hear the thunderous blows as in Fight Night Round 3. Of course, the standing striking of UFC isn’t what differentiates it from other sports like kickboxing. Instead, it’s the intricate and complex ground fighting and positioning something that was surely a worry for the development team when they started making UFC 2009.

In theory, the ground game translates perfectly onto the right analog stick. Through a series of minor and major transitions you can naturally move to and reverse any of the ground positions that you’ll see in a typical Pay-Per-View event. It’s when that theory is applied in the game that things can get just a bit rocky. Every so often you’ll feel like you’ve landed a transition or counter by luck. You’ll try repeatedly to do a reversal or transition out of a position and it won’t work. Then, as if by magic, your final attempt gets the desired result. It’s not a huge annoyance, and when the ground game works it’s great, the problem happens when things don’t transpire the way you feel they should.

I do have a few serious gripes with the combat in UFC 2009 Undisputed. The first is submissions. While they’re fun when playing against someone sitting next to you, they’re almost worthless against the AI (artificial intelligence). In order to be successful you’ll need to significantly drain the other fighter’s stamina and then you’ll have a better shot at making him submit, but there are no guarantees. Maybe it would have helped if there was some sort of meter that popped up as you furiously spin the right analog or mash the face buttons to show your progress. As it stands, it seems like building your fighter’s submission offense is a waste of time unless you’re planning on engaging in a ton of multiplayer matches.

My second issue with the fighting in UFC 2009 is that there’s a definite lack of speed when you compare the game with actual UFC bouts. Because the gameplay looks and feels so much slower than actual UFC fights, we miss out on a lot of the animalistic actions and intensity that happen in the octagon. The result is a less organic and more mechanical fighting experience that doesn’t recreate the real UFC as well as it could have had the framerate been pumped up.

Prototype (stylized as “[PROTOTYPE]“) is an upcoming action game in development by Radical Entertainment and based on an original IP developed in-house. The game is due to be released in North America on June 9, 2009, in Oceania on June 10 and in Europe on June 12. The game will be compatable on with Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 platforms. Prototype was released a day early in Australia.

Characters

Alex J. Mercer

The protagonist antihero. Alex has the ability to modify his genetic code on the fly to produce amazing powers of attack, defense, and perception. He can also easily perform superhuman feats of strength, endurance, speed and agility. Alex was an employee at GENTEK, a corporation centered on biotechnology, before the “incident” which took place 3 weeks before the start of the game.

Dana A. Mercer

Alex’s younger sister. She followed in her brother’s footsteps and ran away from home at a young age to fulfill her dreams. She helps Alex by performing research, aided by her studies in journalism.

Karen Parker

A GENTEK researcher and Alex’s previous love interest from before the incident.

Dr. Bradley Ragland

The doctor who examined Alex before he first awoke with his powers. He is one of Alex’s allies against the infection and an accomplished pathologist. His involvement with the virus, and the entire incident, goes deeper than the surface suggests.

Dr. Raymond McMullen

The head of research at GENTEK. Little else is currently known about this character.

The Specialist

Blackwatch’s finest. He has dealt with Alex’s kind before. Nothing surprises him in biological war. He’s seen it all, and is totally merciless. He is well equipped to deal with various forms of the infection, including the player’s character. In a recent trailer, he has been referred to as Captain Cross.

Elizabeth Greene

A name that appears in a document recovered from Alex’s laptop. She is currently in isolation at the GENTEK facility in New York City. It is assumed that she has abilities that are similar in nature to Alex’s. She appears to be a young girl and a recent trailer on IGN shows her stating “The time for waiting is over.” to Alex before attacking him. Also in a recent trailer, Alex released Greene but finds out that she’ll infect everything she touches.

US Military

US Marine Forces are deployed upon a quarantined Manhattan Island. Martial law is declared, and the city itself is occupied when the virus takes on epidemic proportions. The US military possesses battle tanks, armoured personnel carriers and attack helicopters such as the AH64 Apache, in addition to infantry armed with various weapons such as assault rifles, grenade launchers and missile launchers. The Marines set up fortified areas within New York, deploying turrets, guards and barricades on the streets. The player will often have to enter (either subtly or overtly) these areas in order to gain access to military targets in the Web of Intrigue.
